Intergen: Bringing older and younger people together.

VOLUNTEER IN YOUR LOCAL PRIMARY OR SECONDARY SCHOOL.

Intergen exists to address the problems of

• Underperformance of pupils in schools

• Low aspirations of pupils

• Loneliness of older people

• Hostile intergenerational stereotypes.

We do this by bringing older and younger people together in their neighbourhood schools to

• Enrich opportunities to learn

• Raise aspirations

• Share the untapped range of skills and knowledge that older citizens have to offer.

• Build stronger communities

We work in clusters of three schools, a secondary and two primaries in a partnership. Together we appoint an older person living locally whose job it is to recruit volunteers who are retired and live within two miles of the schools.

The future Intergeners are people with the skills and knowledge the schools have told us they want. We also arrange social meetings once a term for all Intergeners (our volunteers) from the three schools and a National Intergneners’ Day once a year for Intergeners from all over the country.

Our volunteers do many things, e.g. gardening, listening to children read, working behind the scenes in school in support roles, music making etc
