Community Dental Service

The Barts Health Community Dental Service provides dental care to people with special care needs who are unable to access care from high street dentists.

Special care dentistry is concerned with providing and enabling the delivery of oral care to adults and children with an impairment or disability.

We provide all routine NHS dental treatment, such as check-ups, fillings, xrays, extractions, crowns, bridges and dentures. NHS dental charges and exemptions apply. The amount you need to pay will depend on the treatment you need and our staff will discuss this with you.

We provide dental care services to people:

  • with learning disabilities
  • with physical (including sensory) disabilities
  • with complex medical histories
  • with severe dental phobias subject to a referral from a health or social care professional
  • with behaviour problems
  • with drug or alcohol problems
  • with blood borne diseases
  • who are homeless or temporarily housed
  • who are housebound

We also provide services to children with complex social problems.

We provide various sedation methods for very nervous or frightened patients; or special care patients, such as those with severe learning disabilities, who may otherwise be unable to co-operate with dental treatment.

We also provide home visits for housebound patients, and can arrange for our specially designed mobile dental surgery to visit special care organisations.

Accessing this service

We aim to make access as easy as possible with a single point of contact.

When you call us our patient pathway manager will take your referral details. Referral forms are also available from our clinics. People can self-refer or be referred by virtually any health or social care professional.

If you are anxious then the referral must be made by a dentist or other health or social care professional.
